Where can you buy quality hiking, camping, backpacking gear at a good price?

The following information has been provided by Mr. Kunze, Assistant Scoutmaster.  If you have any questions regarding outfitting your scout, please feel free to contact Mr. Kunze or any of the scout leaders.

You can spend a small fortune buying all the equipment your scout uses for the outdoor activities involved in scouting, as I know I have. It has been my experience that the normal outdoor and sporting gear places can be expensive unless they have a sale going on, and I am not always comfortable that when I buy things from Wal-Mart that it is the best quality available. So I am writing this to give you some alternatives.

Below are two places that have proven to provide excellent quality  at very competitive prices, and are willing to share their expertise in a friendly fashion.  Both provide either discounts or don’t charge sales taxes to scouts and scouters (we are a non-profit organization).

During Mr. Kunze's search for equipment, he has compiled a list of quality Sleeping Bags and Tents, with some of their specifications and prices.

I have been buying from Larry for years. He runs this business out of the basement of his house.  He is located not too far from the Mt. Airy water towers.  Don’t let a home location scare you, the store is well equipped and run professionally.  He has run this for years as part of an Explorer Post, and has everything you need for hiking, camping, backpacking, caving, climbing, rappelling and even some gear for skiing and other winter activities. With low overhead and mentioning it is for Scouting, you will be hard pressed to find better pricing.

Directions to The Self-Propelled Outdoorsman

From the Mt. Airy water towers at Colerain Avenue, go West on W North Bend Road to Edger Road. Turn Right onto Edger. Go to the stop sign and turn right on Sunnywoods Lane. It dead ends into Fairwoods, Turn left. The first driveway on the left is Larry’s, 5557 Fairwoods.  If the garage door is open, he is open for business.  Follow the walk on the left side of the house down the stairs around the back.  Ring the bell and you will be let in.

Jerry Allison

401 East Third Street

Dayton, OH 45402

Phone:  (937) 228-2579

I recently met Jerry this last year when he came to a BSA Round Table and gave a talk on ultra-light backpacking.  He was also at our Spring Camporee in late April showing camping gear and donated two tents and a backpack as door prizes. He has proven to be very helpful and willing to donate his time to help scouts learn more about the equipment they will use. At least twice a year, he has a "Scout Night" where you get 20% off his competitively priced outdoor gear with the next one being May 21, from 6 PM until 9 PM. All you need to do is show up in a BSA shirt or provide a BSA identification card to get the discount.

Pro Bass Shops        www.basspro-shops.com

One other organization is worthy of note. For the last two years the Bass Pro Shop at Forest Fair Mall has sponsored the our Ft. Ancient Spring Camporee, providing clinics on fishing, awards for the fishing derby, and door prizes too.
